Last August while visiting my daughter in Montrose, on the Western Slope of Colorado, I luxuriated during the warm afternoons underneath a fragrant pear tree, peering up through branches loaded with rich, ripe pears. The heavenly greens and golds and warm browns filled my vision, maturing within me after I returned home until the sheer physicality of ripe pears flowed from my brush onto paper.
